When a marriage proposal comes, most Kerala families ask first: is there porutham? The word means agreement, or fit. Traditionally, astrologers compare the birth stars of the bride and groom on ten points, the dasha porutham.
The ten points
| Porutham | What it looks at |
|---|---|
| Rasi | How the two Moon signs sit from each other. |
| Rasyadhipa | Whether the lords of the two Moon signs are friendly. |
| Vasya | Mutual attraction between the two signs. |
| Mahendra | Prosperity and the well-being of children. |
| Gana | Temperament: deva, manushya or asura nature of the stars. |
| Yoni | Physical and emotional compatibility, shown by the animal of each star. |
| Dina | Health and day-to-day harmony, counted from the bride’s star. |
| Stree deergha | The distance between the two stars, for the wife’s welfare. |
| Rajju | Traditionally seen as one of the most important, for the long life of the marriage. |
| Vedha | Whether the two stars are a mutually obstructing pair. |
Why a score is not the whole answer
It is tempting to count how many of the ten agree, or to read a percentage, and stop there. Experienced astrologers do not. Some poruthams carry more weight than others, and many have exceptions: a missing porutham can be compensated when, for example, the rasi lords are friendly.
The horoscopes themselves matter too. That is why a full Kerala matching also checks:
- Papa samyam, the balance of malefic strength in the two charts.
- Chovva dosham, and whether it is matched or cancelled.
- Dasa sandhi, whether both people change dasa at about the same time.
