Few words cause as much worry in Kerala households as chovva dosham. Yet it is common, it is often cancelled, and on its own it says much less than people fear.
What it is
Chovva is Mars, also called Kuja. In general terms, chovva dosham is said to be present when Mars occupies certain houses counted from the lagna, the Moon or Venus, most often the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th. Because the rule looks at several houses and several reference points, a large share of all horoscopes show some form of it.
When it is cancelled
Classical texts list many conditions that reduce or remove the dosha, depending on the sign Mars is in, its strength, and the aspects it receives. A Kerala astrologer looks at these before calling a chart chovva dosha jathakam.
In matching, the most common answer is samyam, balance: when both horoscopes carry a comparable dosha, it is considered matched. This is why matching checks both charts together rather than labelling one person.
How to think about it
- It is one factor among many, not a verdict on a person or a marriage.
- The same rule applies to men and women.
- A careful matching shows whether it is present, whether it is cancelled, and whether it is balanced.
